A Sporting Vision: The Paul Mellon Collection of British Sporting Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is on view from April 13 through July 22, 2018. The Horse in Ancient Greek Art exhibition opens September 9 and related programming is planned during the fall to include free academic tours, lectures, and coffee talks. The exhibition showcases Greek art  from the 8th through 4th centuries BCE and was organized by the NSLM and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; The Horse and the Camera exhibition is on view and features more than 150 vintage and antique photographs from the collection of Judith and Jo Tartt, Jr.; The NSLM is on cue for the 7th Annual Polo Classic benefit taking place at Great Meadow on September 10; Projects in the Main Reading Room of the NSLM Library have been completed; The NSLM held its Annual Book Auction as well as a Big Book Sale; Anne Jarvis will speak at Vine Hill Dinner; Artists in Middleburg & the NSLM partner for Equine Sculpture Workshop; NSLM Fellow Klazina Botke discusses Jan Van Der Straet's Equile, Seu Speculum Equorum Series.

This issue announces the focus on Sir Alfred J. Munnings (English, 1878 – 1959) with the exhibition Munnings: Out in the Open and a “Summer in February” fund-raising dinner and movie. The George and Mary Chapman fly-fishing collection donation is described. There is an article about the honors Jacqueline B. Mars has received for her philanthropy. Two new staff members are presented: Melanie Leigh Mathewes, NSLM executive director and Nicole Stribling, assistant curator. Several events are highlighted: the Nitze party in Georgetown, the Bruce Smart book signing, the opening of an NSLM curated exhibit for the Washington Winter Show, a lecture by acclaimed conservationist Thomas E. Lovejoy and the visit of several Sackler 25th Anniversary Gala celebrants. Other visitors are noted. There is a list of upcoming exhibitions and events, including the 2013 Book Fair roster. Spring 2012 NSLM Newsletter

The cover story is "In the Spotlight: Virginia Governor, Archivist of the United States, and Museum Leaders Pay Visits." Other stories include "Rare Books and Archives Enhance the Library’s Collection," and the announcements of Ronald M. Bradley as a new member of the NSLM board of directors and Claudia Pfeiffer, as new George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Museum Curator. Lectures by Lord Charles Cecil of the R. S. Surtees Society, England, and Corey Piper, Daniels Fellow and curatorial associate for the Mellon Collection, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, are summarized. The 2012 – 2013 Daniels Fellows are announced and an article by Fellow Judith Martin Woodall is printed. Visitors to the NSLM are highlighted including Tristan Pillimore and Jemma Tuomey, London, and William and Fiona (née Forsyth) Spencer, UK. Winter 2012 NSLM Newsletter

This issue announces the focus on Sir Alfred J. Munnings (English, 1878 – 1959) with the exhibition Munnings: Out in the Open and a “Summer in February” fund-raising dinner and movie. The George and Mary Chapman fly-fishing collection donation is described. There is an article about the honors Jacqueline B. Mars has received for her philanthropy. Two new staff members are presented: Melanie Leigh Mathewes, NSLM executive director and Nicole Stribling, assistant curator. Several events are highlighted: the Nitze party in Georgetown, the Bruce Smart book signing, the opening of an NSLM curated exhibit for the Washington Winter Show, a lecture by acclaimed conservationist Thomas E. Lovejoy and the visit of several Sackler 25th Anniversary Gala celebrants. Other visitors are noted. There is a list of upcoming exhibitions and events, including the 2013 Book Fair roster. The cover story is the extraordinary “NSLM POLO!” weekend that included a benefit polo luncheon and game, a symposium composed of leading authorities on polo and an exhibition of over 50 pieces of polo-related art. Current exhibitions are featured: Bob Kuhn: Drawing on Instinct, a traveling exhibition curated by Adam Harris, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Intersection: Field Sports and the Evolution of Conservation, curated by Mickey Gustafson and Lisa Campbell. Three new members of the board of directors are presented: Claire Reid, B. Tim Brookshire, and Guy O. Dove. Book donations, the October 19th open house, exhibitions and events, the NSLM|Chronicle Cup and the duplicate book sale are noted. Many visitors are featured including Julian Raby, Freer|Sackler Museum director and Betsy Broun, Smithsonian Museum of American Art director. There are articles by John H. Daniels Fellows Andrew Lemon and Jennifer Corrinne Brown. Artists Tony Barham and Misia Broadhead are recognized for their efforts in developing Sunday Sketch. Recent art donations and the visit of Felcia Warburg Rogan founder of the Sporting Art Initiative are included. The cover story is "In the Spotlight: Virginia Governor, Archivist of the United States, and Museum Leaders Pay Visits." Other stories include "Rare Books and Archives Enhance the Library’s Collection," and the announcements of Ronald M. Bradley as a new member of the NSLM board of directors and Claudia Pfeiffer, as new George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Museum Curator. Lectures by Lord Charles Cecil of the R. S. Surtees Society, England, and Corey Piper, Daniels Fellow and curatorial associate for the Mellon Collection, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, are summarized. The 2012 – 2013 Daniels Fellows are announced and an article by Fellow Judith Martin Woodall is printed. The cover story is “Capacity Crowd Celebrates Spectacular New Museum and Inaugural Exhibition.” Photographs of the Gala, the exhibit and the Coaching Event are featured. A page is devoted to visitors from around the world. Donations of books, fine art and a 1913 sterling silver coach-and-four created for the Alfred G. Vanderbilt dining table are listed. Aero won the NSLM/Chronicle Cup, Virginia Fall races 2011. Librarian Lisa Campbell was elected to the Grolier Club. The death of John William “Billy” Abel Smith, strong supporter of the NSLM and husband of board member Mimi Abel Smith is listed. “The World is British Sporting Print,” by Fellow Cory Piper, Curatorial Assistant for the Mellon Collections, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, outlines research done in preparation for an upcoming VMFA exhibition catalogue. Fellow Elizabeth Letts has a best seller, The Eighty Dollar Champion, on The New York Times hard-cover non-fiction list. The NSLM has issued a call for Daniels Fellowship applications, due February 1, 2012. A book review of the Greater Journey by David McCullough is on the Web site. The cover story is" National Sporting Library Unveils New Museum in October with Historic Coaching Drive, Gala, and Exhibit." Other topics include the history of Vine Hill, the building that was renovated and expanded to house the new Museum. Photographs show visitors getting preview tours of the new building. In the Blacksmith Shop, an exhibit in the Library, is introduced with an article on a veterinary case book from the 19th century. Librarian Campbell attended Rare Book School and Comminucations and Education Director Mickey Gustafson attended an arts integration workshop at The Phillips Collection. The NSLM Annual Report of 2010 Donors is included. The donation of a rare first edition Essays on Hunting is noted. Photographs from the NSLM Book Fair are featured.
