Melanie Mathewes

Melanie Mathewes has served as the Executive Director of the National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) since 2013. Prior to joining NSLM, Mathewes was Executive Director of the Hermitage Museum & Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia. Currently she is an active member of the Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) and chair of the VAM membership committee. From 2010 to 2014, she represented the Tidewater and Eastern Shore region on the VAM council.

Mathewes’ museum career spans two decades and includes both teaching and museum experience. She has instructed courses in art history as an adjunct faculty member at Tidewater Community College. She has presented at VAM conferences on topics such as membership and development. The list of notable museums Mathewes has worked with includes: Agecroft Hall, The Museum of the Southwest, Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum, Craven Arts Council, Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens and Norfolk Botanical Garden. She holds a bachelor's degree in art and architectural history from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) and a master's degree in museum studies from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Mrs. Mathewes’ husband Perry Mathewes is the Director of Gardens for the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, VA. Mrs. Mathewes, her husband and their two daughters reside in Philomont, Virginia.
