Gilbert Joseph Holiday (British, 1879-1937), Hurlingham, c. 1925
The artwork selected to celebrate this year’s Polo Classic is Hurlingham, by revered British sporting artist Gilbert Holiday. In the composition, two British players with fresh polo ponies chat with an elegantly-dressed onlooker between chukkas. The impressionistic image captures the romance and flare of the English polo scene at the esteemed Hurlingham Club in London during the interwar period. The Club, first established as a pigeon shooting association in 1867, began to offer polo in 1874 and implemented the first code of rules for the sport in 1875. It was also host to the Westchester Cup during the years the prestigious international match was played in England, as well as the polo venue for the 1908 Olympic Games. Horace A. Laffaye, M.D., an authority on the history of international polo and an NSLM John H. Daniels Fellow, wrote in his book, The Evolution of Polo, in 2009, “The Hurlingham Club in Fulham has exerted more influence worldwide on the game than any other polo club.”
