History in Hand

What can we learn from letters, photographs, and other archive materials? Hear tales of yesteryear as told by representatives of the National Sporting Library & Museum, the Clarke County Historical Association, and the Thomas Balch Library.

The National Sporting Library & Museum, Middleburg, VA: The National Sporting Library & Museum was founded in 1954 as a public research resource on equestrian, angling and field sports. The NSLM Archive Collection is housed on the Lower Level of the Library.  The archive consists of letters, papers, hunt diaries, photographs, scrapbooks and other ephemera from the past two centuries. Thomas Balch Library, Leesburg, VA: Thomas Balch Library is a history and genealogy library owned and operated by the Town of Leesburg. Collections focus on Loudoun County, regional and Virginia history, genealogy, military history with special emphasis on the American Civil War, and ethnic history. It is designated as an Underground Railroad research site. Archives include Loudoun town and county records, personal papers, and business, organizational and club records. Collection materials include diaries, correspondence, account books, minutes and ordinances. Presented by Alexandra GressittLibrary Director.

Clarke County Historical Association, Berryville, VA: Located in the historic Coiner House in Berryville, Virginia, the Clarke County Historical Association’s mission is to help preserve the historical resources and records of Clarke County and to foster their use, understanding, and enjoyment through stewardship and education. CCHA archives boast an extensive collection of documents and memorabilia acquired over many years, often donated by residents.  Church and burial records, historical photographs, newspaper files, maps, drawings, and other material create a rich resource for those researching local history and genealogy.
