ARTWORK: Andre Pater (Polish/American, b. 1953) Kinetic Contact, 1992, oil on canvas, 54 x 42 inches, Private Collection. Copyright Andre Pater.
Contemporary sporting artist Andre Pater has gained international recognition for his masterful and vibrant oil and pastel paintings that bring sporting art to the 21st century. One of his earlier works, Kinetic Contact, was on loan to the exhibition Andre Pater: In a Sporting Light. The tour-de-force retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the National Sporting Library & Museum in 2017. Pater experimented with his technique in this polo composition, incorporating graphic-linear elements to emphasize movement, as seen in the frenetic energy of the ride-off. Hilary J. Boone, III, a 3-goal polo player and president and long-time director of the Lexington Polo Club in Kentucky, was the model for the figure in the foreground of the composition.
