The NSLM Welcomes Secretariat Back to Virginia

On August 9 from 5-8pm, join the NSLM as we welcome back to its home state, sculptor Jocelyn Russell’s statue of Virginia-born Secretariat. Cast in bronze, the likeness of the legendary Thoroughbred galloping to victory weighs 3,800-pounds, is 21 feet long, and stands 12 feet tall. Secretariat has been racing across the county on an epic Triple Crown tour and will be at the Saratoga race course prior to arriving at the NSLM for display in the front circle for this event.

The evening program will include Jocelyn Russell speaking about the making of the sculpture titled Secretariat Racing into History and its more than 3,500-mile journey on the road. We will also hear from Penny Chenery’s daughter, Kate Chenery Tweedy, about her own experiences with Secretariat and his string of victories in 1973 that led to the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Following the speakers do not miss the opportunity to have your photo taken with the Secretariat sculpture and a grandson of Secretariat!
