George Stubbs: The Anatomy of Animal Art

Apr 9, 2027 - Sep 11, 2027

Today, George Stubbs, the father of the sporting art genre, is revered for his ground-breaking self-taught approach and expressive realism. This important exhibition and accompanying catalogue, George Stubbs: The Anatomy of Animal Art, will celebrate the magnitude of his artistic contributions through his paintings of sporting subjects and domesticated and wild animals.

Organized by the National Sporting Library & Museum, approximately 30 works will showcase Stubbs’s dramatic range, a fusion of scientific observation and artistic mastery, which had a transformative impact on fine art as well as our understanding of anatomy.

Loans from national and international public organizations are being secured, including from prestigious partner institution, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Confirmed private loans will present a rare opportunity to see Stubbs’s artwork together in an American exhibition for the first time.
